I love three things best about Timberon, which I've visited multiple times this year.

First, getting there – it's magically remote and the drive from any direction will take you through desert dunes and mountain foothills, stretches of grassy ranch and ghost towns filled with weathered stone structures and twisting, bare-branched trees. Bring a camera and a bottle of water.

Second, Timberon's wilderness is shockingly beautiful. Elk, deer and a dozen varieties of songbird will come right up and stare at you; you're the new kid here.

Third, the Finders' Lodge is a real sanctuary – a clean, warm, comfortable home rather than a cold, bland rental property. The grounds are easy to navigate, and both the house and guest house come fully equipped. Each offers plenty of comfy places to flop down with the remains of a pie (purchased still warm at the general store – it's the best cherry, berry or apple you've ever had) and join the animals for their nightly ritual of grazing happily while the sun sets. But as soon as that sun has finished setting, put down your fork and get ready. One view of this night sky – the real, unlit-from-below night sky, dominated by a Milky Way that is suddenly, creamily, aptly named – changes everything. Welcome to Timberon.

I had the opportunity to stay in Timberon for a whole month. The clean air, mountain views and quiet solitude healed and inspired me. Without thinking about it, I found myself writing poetry and songs, painting and dancing, hiking and singing, and napping out under the pines and alligator junipers. My time in Timberon has now become one of those beautiful memories that enriches your soul and pops to mind unexpectedly with the scent of a pine tree or during a half-sleeping moment when the vista of green valleys, yellow deserts, white sands, distant mountains and wide blue skies come drifting into your mind and a warm smile comes over you, reminding you that life is a beautiful adventure!

I found Timberon to be a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of my daily life. Tucked away in the hills of a national forest, with spectacular views peeking out from the trees and winding roads, I wandered through the quiet beauty, recharging my body and soul. The comfortable, private accommodations provided space to enjoy and explore, and made for the perfect place to work on the latest artistic project which was itching to get out from the back of my brain. I only stayed for a weekend, but I hope to go back for a month, soon. It is a small slice of paradise!

Timberon is a delightful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city or the suburbs. Deer walk the grounds, watching you watch them, unruffled except when one almost bumps into them. The seasons are beautiful. I have visited, winter, spring, summer, and fall. Each season holds special delights. Nestled amidst pines and juniper near the crest of a ridge, overlooking a beautiful green valley, you can watch the sunset light the mountains in ruby red. Hummingbirds and songbirds flit about the house. Friendly cattle, burros, elk with great antlers greet you as you enter town - on one trip I sighted over 60 elk!

Timberon is like stepping back in time, experiencing life in America the way it was decades ago. Connected to the land. Friendly, polite, and respectful. Sensible and grounded in the importance of the land and nature.

The nearby towns like Cloudcroft are so endearing and friendly. The drives to visit them are delightful and picturesque adventures. The solar and night sky observatories at Sunspot and Apache Point are fascinating. And the fresh made pies and baked goods at the general store in Cloudcroft are amazing. While staying in Timberon I have visited and soft dunes of White Sands. I have trekked through 40 mile long areas of ancient lava flows, and I have explored old New Mexico ghost towns.

It is wonderful to stay somewhere that is so rich with interesting and exciting opportunities for exploration. It is also a place that invites you to relax and just listen to the silence or the sound of wind in the trees. The house is warm and cozy in cold weather, and breezy and cooling in the summer months. I love sitting on the screened porch, reading, writing, drawing, or just drinking tea and breathing the clean air. The kitchen makes me want to cook - and I swear the food always tastes better and richer.

When I need to have entertainment it's there - DVDs and high speed wireless internet. The iMac computer that is available for guests is easy to use and is great for watching movies, listening to web radio, podcasts, cds, or mp3s. In the evening after dinner it is so nice to turn the lights down low, open a bottle of wine, and listen to music on the stereo. Once I get there I just don't want to leave. It feels like a home.
